Alissa stood firm. “I can guarantee it wasn’t the ghost who killed either of them,” she said. “This Leroy Quint guy was unlucky, yeah, but he died in a normal town, right?”

“Yeah, but he was a wizard. And ghost hunter,” I said. “Also, I might add that the ghost flung me into the lake earlier.”

“So that’s why your clothes are all wrinkled.”

I scowled. “Sky, back me up.”

Sky didn’t so much as stir from his nap.

Alissa snorted. “Look, Blair, I have no doubt the ghost threw you in the lake, but there’s a difference between that and killing two people who were nowhere near the scene of her haunting. What does Maura think?”

“Maura wants to find the ghost’s real body and return it to her grave,” I told her. “Give her a proper burial.”

“Not a bad idea.”

“No, but her alternative plan involves telling Steve her theory that someone intentionally gave up on investigating Mattie’s death.”

“That’s a terrible one.”

“I know, but it seems bizarre that nobody seems to have known her when she was alive,” I said. “She grew up in the foster system, so I don’t think Maura was able to get far with her research, but there must be someone we can talk to. Better than antagonising her ghost again.”

“You’ve got that right,” said Alissa. “All right, we’ll talk through our options at the pub. If they have one day left before they leave town, then we can see to it that they don’t get up to any more mischief.”

“Fair point.”

We left the flat and walked to the pub, where Maura and Carey waited for us near the door. When we picked out a table and sat down, Maura reached into her bag and pulled out her hand-drawn map.

“What is that?” Alissa peered at the blob-like drawing of the lake, which bore a slight resemblance to one of the abstract art pieces in Veronica’s office. “A cloud?”

“A map, of course.” Maura spread the sheet of paper across the table. “Of the lake.”

“What’re those?” I pointed at the X marks she’d scrawled at various intervals around the lake.

“Places the ghost has been sighted, according to the articles we found in the library,” she replied. “None of those spots are anywhere near where we found the ghost ourselves.”

“You think her body might be located at one of those spots?”

“Maybe, but it’s not consistent.” She poked a particular spot where several Xs overlapped. “The majority of reports say the ghost typically appears in this area, so it’s our best bet.”

“Except she usually comes out at midnight,” Carey added.

When our food appeared on the table, Maura rolled up the map and put it away. “I’ve gone through all the articles, so to find out more, we’ll have to go back to the lake.”

“I thought you could use your Reaper abilities to find her at any time, not just midnight,” Alissa commented.

“I can,” she answered. “In theory. However, if there is more than one ghost, it would explain the discrepancies between our experience with Mattie and the ghost from the stories.
